A Bit of Behind-the-Scenes
I love working with accents and dialects! For this episode I got to play a Scottish accent. The first time I performed with a Scottish accent was in a production of Brigadoon at The Grand Theatre in Salt Lake City, UT. I was 15 turning 16 during that production and was cast as Bonnie Jean McClaren. This show was special to me for many reasons, but the most tender reason was Brigadoon was the only full-length musical I did with my dad. My dad didn’t audition, but I was learning to drive with a permit that required an adult to be in the car with me and The Grand Theatre was a ways from my home. I was going to get a lot of practice. My dad accompanied me. It was our second rehearsal, I think, when the director spoke with my dad, heard the beautiful dialect my dad still returned from being born in Birmingham, asked if he wanted to be in the show too, and so it was. My dad’s Scottish accent was excellent. He always had a gorgeous voice, he could sing, and his stage presence was sparkling. We did the show together and he saw how hard I worked and how seriously I took it. He hadn’t wanted me to be an actress, but after that show opened, he told me he was proud of me, especially proud of how I conducted myself. It was a big deal moment for me. And just by association, performing with a Scottish accent always reminds me of him and his love for me. Maybe in your mind that seems disconnected from Ainsley and the Selkie Skin–not for me.
